Chris & Colette with the current MTB world down hill champions Gee and Rach Atherton. Big brother Dan is still in recovery mode after breaking a collar bone. The fact they were now World Champs still didn't stop them from getting a beasting at f2k Health and Fitness, Didsbury, Manchester. Not even the Red Bull could get them out of this one!.

Dr Duncan completes the Marathon des Sables!
Duncan Hill recently completed the infamous Marathon des Sables in Morocco. The MDS is a stage race run over six days through the Sahara desert in blistering heat. Competitors are required to carry their equipment and food for the entire race, with only water provided. His preparation involved long runs carrying up to 110% of his target weight on consecutive days, and involved training on sand dunes. In Duncan’s own words... This march/April 2008, I took part in the Marathon Des Sables - Desert Race. It is reputed to be one of the toughest footrace on earth... even Jack Osborne failed!! There have been a few TV shows on it you might have seen but if not here is a little info. The route for 2008 was 245.3 Km/152 miles long, making it the longest ever in the history of the Marathon des Sables (in sections of 31.6, 38, 40.5, 75.5, 42.2, 17.5 km) run over 6 days. Competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). We experienced mid-day temperatures of up to 120°F on uneven rocky, stony ground as well as sand dunes. On the 4th day, you set off across the barren wilderness to complete a 45 - 50 mile stage. Few people complete this before dark that evening and some will not come in till after dark the next night. This is followed by the 42km Marathon stage. I had planned to run it last year but was forced to pull out due to medical career fiascos. The heat, distance and rubbing trash your feet, blisters are a standard and some get infected. Physical fitness is important but it is said mental stamina probably constitutes at least 50% of whether you will complete the distance or not. I ran it, raising money for 'Hope and Homes for Children' who work in Eastern Europe and Africa to provide a family and a future for orphaned or abandoned children, after war or conflict, support desperate mothers who may otherwise abandon their babies and provide a vital lifeline for families of AIDS orphans headed by frail grandparents or children. Well done Doc from all at f2kmultisports!
